'Our play was sh*t so the linesman couldn’t believe our goal’

The 48-year-old's wit was still sharp after his side's blunt display against Newcastle United on Sunday evening, in which Alberto Moreno's goal was incorrectly chalked off

'Our play was sh*t so the linesman couldn’t believe our goal’
Jurgen Klopp half-joked that Liverpool’s performance at Newcastle was so lacklustre that the linesman ruled Alberto Moreno’s goal out because he couldn’t believe the visitors managed a moment of class.

The full back volleyed home from James Milner’s pass, a strike which would’ve cancelled out Martin Skrtel’s own goal and levelled matters late on at St James’ Park.

However, the official incorrectly chalked off the effort and Georginio Wijnaldum punished the Reds on the counter to give Steve McClaren's men a 2-0 victory.

There was an element of fortune about the finish as Moreno seemed to cross the ball instead of trying to beat Rob Elliot. Regardless of whether the Spaniard intended to shoot or not, it should have reflected on the scoreboard, though Klopp saw the funny side after the game.

“The first goal is a Christmas present,” Klopp said after the final whistle. “Then we made our own goal, but because we weren’t good enough today, the linesman thought ‘well, you don’t make world class goals if you play this sh*t!’”

The Reds boss was more incisive than his side as he tackled what went wrong on Sunday evening.

He reflected: “Nearly everything! The start, the middle and the end!

“Obviously it was not a good football game. That was 50 per cent because of Newcastle and 50 per cent because of Liverpool.

“They didn’t really create chances, but neither did we. It was an open game, but there was no rhythm from us in our game.

“Our defending in the last line was good, but our midfield pressing was not good, and I couldn’t see offensive pressing. Dejan [Lovren], Martin and the two full backs did a good job, but we were not creative enough, so we had no chances.”

Klopp switched it up against Newcastle with six changes from the starting line-up that thumped Southampton 6-1, but he defended his alterations.

“We had to change, not because of the last game against Southampton but because of all the games we have had,” he said.

“If you rotate, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. We have to think if we did something wrong before the game, and if not then we have to find another reason.

“This team has big quality. We like to work together, but today we got beat.

“We can’t ignore this. In professional football, if you don’t feel defeats, then something is really wrong. We feel this defeat. It’s deserved, but it hurts, like it should.”
